In 1987, Peugeot embarked on a new adventure and set itself the goal of winning one of the world's most testing motor competitions, the Paris-Dakar cross-country rally, across France, Algeria, Niger, Mali, Mauritania, and Senegal. To achieve this incredible ambition, the manufacturers developed a car that would prove unbeatable: the Peugeot 205 T16 Grand Raid.
With the 205 Turbo 16 Grand Raid and the support of the Peugeot team deployed in Africa, Ari Vatanen conclusively won the 1987 Paris-Dakar, ushering in a period of absolute domination by the brand in African cross-country races.
